Te mapa
Gran Canaria is close to round, and its terrain explains its road map. A high volcanic core rises in the middle of the island, and deep ravines, called barrancos, fall away from it in every direction. Roads follow those ravines or twist along the ridges between them. From above, this creates a pattern like the spokes of a wheel, reaching from the mountains down to the coast.
The capital, Las Palmas, fills the northeastern corner, where a narrow isthmus links the city to La Isleta, a small volcanic peninsula. Las Canteras beach curves along one side of the isthmus and the port along the other. In the south, the Maspalomas dunes form a patch of sand beside the resort towns, a flat, pale shape against the dense streets around it.
A Gran Canaria map poster shows why the island is often called a continent in miniature, with humid northern slopes, a dry south and pine forests in the uplands. Near the centre stands Roque Nublo, a basalt pillar that has become the island's emblem. Nearby Pico de las Nieves, the highest point, looks down on ravines that reach the sea.
Deep ravines run outward from the central summit to the coast, and the roads that follow them give the island its wheel-like structure on paper.
In Las Palmas, a thin strip of city connects the main island to a small volcanic peninsula, with a beach on one side and a harbour on the other.
A field of open sand on the southern coast, clearly separate from the resort street grids that surround it on the map.
