Te mapa
Granite City lies in the American Bottom, the flat floodplain on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, directly across from north St. Louis. On a map it is defined by industry and water: the steel works along its southern side, extensive rail yards, and the Chain of Rocks Canal, which bypasses a stretch of rocky river to the west.
The town was founded in the 1890s by the Niedringhaus brothers, who moved their enamelled kitchenware business here, and the name comes from their graniteware. Its residential streets form a straight grid of modest blocks, with the old downtown close to the mills.
Just northwest of town, the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, once part of Route 66, crosses the Mississippi with a distinctive bend in the middle and is now used by pedestrians and cyclists. A Granite City map poster shows river, canal, grid and industry in one strong composition.
The navigation canal runs parallel to the Mississippi on the west side of town, a long, straight channel that doubles the water lines on the map.
The large steel mill site forms a broad industrial block of sheds and rail sidings next to the residential grid, a key part of the town's identity.
The former Route 66 bridge with its angled midpoint crosses the Mississippi northwest of town, one of the most recognisable shapes in the region.

Koteā ko Granite City
The map of Granite City suits families with roots in the mills, people from the Metro East and Route 66 enthusiasts. The combination of river, canal and industrial grid gives it a bold, graphic character.
Add a title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps a family name or a year at the mill, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Printed posters ship from partners in the United States, with an optional wooden frame.
