Te mapa
Gravataí lies in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, in the south of Brazil, on the plain northeast of the state capital. The river that shares the city's name winds across this low ground toward the Guaíba, flanked by marshes and flood meadows that break the street grid into separate clusters. Seen from above, the built-up area is broad and flat, with neighbourhoods set along the main road corridors.
Upstream, the river rises in the Banhado Grande, a large wetland that shows up on the map as an expanse with almost no streets. Closer to the centre, the city fabric is a mix of older blocks around the main square and newer housing estates laid out on regular grids as the population grew.
Gravataí is also an industrial town, with a large automotive plant among its best-known employers. A Gravataí map poster makes that mix visible: tight residential streets, the big rectangular footprints of factories and warehouses, and the highways heading toward Porto Alegre in one direction and the coast of Rio Grande do Sul in the other.
The river meanders across the low plain in loose curves, edged by marshland, and forms a natural boundary for many of the city's districts.
East of the city, the Banhado Grande wetlands leave a wide, almost empty area on the map, where the river begins its course toward the Guaíba.
Major highways run through the municipality toward Porto Alegre and the Atlantic coast, and much of the urban growth lines up along them.
