Porto Alegre's historic centre occupies a point of land reaching into the Guaíba, the broad body of water formed where several rivers meet before flowing toward the Lagoa dos Patos. On the map the centre is a compact grid on that peninsula, with the waterfront curving around it and the city spreading out to the north and east.
The city is known for its sunsets over the Guaíba and for the Mercado Público, its traditional public market. Farther south, a series of hills, the morros, breaks up the street pattern, while the islands of the Jacuí delta lie to the northwest. In 2024 severe floods affected large parts of the city and the surrounding state.
