Te mapa
Güines sits on the flat, fertile plain of Mayabeque province, south-east of Havana. The town follows the classic Spanish colonial pattern: a regular grid of streets and square blocks around a central plaza. On a map, that grid is clear and consistent, stretching out in every direction until it reaches the fields that surround the town.
The Mayabeque River passes nearby, and its curving line breaks the straight edges of the plan. Outside the town, the land has long been used for sugarcane, and rural roads cross it in long, straight lines between the plots. The railway line, which still links the town with the capital, runs through as another strong line on the map.
Güines has a place in railway history. In 1837–1838, Cuba's first railway line was built from Havana to Güines to carry sugar to the port, making it one of the earliest railways in Latin America. A Güines map poster captures a town shaped by sugar and the rails that served it.

The rail route toward Havana cuts across the map, a reminder of the historic line that once carried sugar from these fields to the port.
Beyond the town, straight farm roads divide the flat land into large plots, leaving an open, lightly marked area around the grid.
