Te mapa
Hartīshēk lies in the Somali Region of eastern Ethiopia, not far from the border with Somaliland. It is a trading town, and its layout reflects that: a loose spread of streets and compounds around the roads that carry goods and people across the border area. Beyond the built-up area the map opens onto wide, dry plains.
The town became internationally known in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when a very large refugee camp formed nearby for people fleeing the conflict in northern Somalia. At its peak it was one of the largest refugee camps in the world. Today the town is better known locally for its market and cross-border trade.
A Hartīshēk map poster shows a place shaped by movement. The roads matter more than any single building, and the open land around them fills much of the frame. It is a modest, honest map of a town that has played a larger part in regional history than its size suggests.
The main roads through town connect it with Jijiga and the border crossings. On the map they are the strongest lines and hold the whole layout together.
Streets and compounds spread outward without a strict grid, giving the town an irregular, open texture that is typical of the region.
Flat, dry country surrounds the town on all sides. The wide empty space on the poster reflects the landscape of this border area.
