Te mapa
Henderson Island belongs to the Pitcairn Islands, a British overseas territory in the South Pacific, and it is one of the most isolated places on earth. It is a raised coral atoll. An old reef has been lifted above the sea to form a flat limestone plateau, edged by cliffs and fringed in places by narrow beaches and reef.
The map is almost wholly natural. There are no towns, no roads and no permanent inhabitants, only the rounded outline of the plateau and the pale band of reef around it. The absence of human marks gives it a clarity unusual in cartography, a single shape surrounded by open ocean.
Henderson Island has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988 and is valued as a largely untouched ecosystem with its own endemic birds. It has also become known for the quantity of plastic debris that ocean currents wash onto its beaches. A Henderson Island map poster presents it simply, as a lone island far from any mainland.
The island is an uplifted coral platform. From above it is a compact, level shape with steep edges instead of a central peak or lagoon.
A reef margin runs along parts of the coast and draws a fine second outline just offshore.
With no settlement or infrastructure, the map is shoreline and ocean only, a rare picture of a place almost untouched by people.

Koteā ko Henderson Island
This is a map for people drawn to the idea of remoteness: sailors, naturalists and anyone who likes to think about the far corners of the Pacific. Its lone, simple form works well as a calm focal point in a modern room.
