Te mapa
Mangaia is the southernmost island of the Cook Islands and one of the geologically oldest in the Pacific. From above it is roughly round, but its structure is layered: a narrow coastal strip, then a high ring of raised fossil coral, locally called makatea, and inside that a central plateau of weathered volcanic hills.
Between the makatea wall and the central hills lies a low zone of taro swamps and a lake, where much of the island's farming is done. The makatea itself is riddled with caves, some of them historically used as burial places. Villages sit on the coastal flats, linked by a road around the island.
Captain James Cook sighted and briefly visited Mangaia in 1777 on his third voyage. A Mangaia map poster shows the island's concentric rings with unusual clarity, coast, coral cliff, wetland and hills, all held in a near circle in the open Pacific.
A band of raised fossil coral circles the island, rising as a steep wall. On the map it forms a distinct ring between the coastal villages and the interior.
Between the coral ring and the central hills lie wetlands and a lake, where taro is grown. On the poster they appear as a softer inner band around the plateau.
A road follows the flat land near the shore, connecting the island's villages. It traces the whole outline, a clean circle just inside the reef.

Koteā ko Mangaia
Mangaia matters deeply to people with family roots in the Cook Islands, many of whom live in New Zealand and Australia. Its ringed shape also makes a beautiful map in its own right, simple from a distance and detailed up close.
Add a family name or village to the title, a date to the subtitle, and edit the coordinates line. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand and Paper give the coral landscape a warm tone.
