Maiao lies in French Polynesia, west of Moorea in the Society Islands. It is small and remote by local standards, reached mostly by boat. From above it has a distinctive composition: a narrow ring of land with modest hills, enclosing two inland lakes, all surrounded by a coral reef and a lagoon.
The lakes are the island's defining feature on a map, two bodies of brackish water taking up a large share of the interior. Around them, the land is a thin green band with scattered houses, gardens and coconut palms. The outer reef draws a second, wider line around everything.
