Te mapa
Makatea is an uplifted coral atoll in the northwest of the Tuamotu archipelago, in French Polynesia. Unlike the low, ring-shaped atolls around it, it rises from the sea in steep limestone cliffs, with a flat plateau on top. From above it looks compact and solid, with narrow beaches and few breaks in its coast.
From 1908 to 1966, Makatea was a major phosphate mining site, and thousands of workers lived and laboured on the island. When the mines closed, most people left, leaving behind rail lines, industrial ruins and a plateau riddled with deep pits. Today a small community remains, and the cliffs have drawn climbers and adventurous visitors.
A Makatea map poster reveals a solid, rounded island with a firm perimeter. The interior carries the traces of its industrial past, while the coast is simple and decisive. It is a striking print for people who know French Polynesia, for those interested in industrial heritage, and for anyone drawn to an island with an unusual story.
Steep limestone cliffs rise around much of the island, giving it a clean, defined edge that reads strongly against the surrounding ocean.
The interior plateau bears the remains of phosphate mining, and tracks and settlement traces give the map most of its internal lines.
Unlike the lagoon atolls of the Tuamotus, Makatea is a single solid mass, so on the map it looks more like a stone than a necklace.

Koteā ko Makatea
Makatea means a great deal to families with roots in the mining years and to travellers who have seen its cliffs and pits in person. The compact shape is easy to frame and makes a strong, understated statement.
Edit the title and subtitle with a family name or a year, and keep the coordinates as a precise reference. Paper and Sand suit the pale limestone, while Classic black & white, Noir and Blueprint offer other moods, in six print sizes.
