Te mapa
Fatu Hiva is the southernmost inhabited island of the Marquesas in French Polynesia. From above it looks like a tangle of knife-edge ridges falling into the Pacific. There is almost no flat ground. Valleys open like fingers toward the western coast. The two villages, Omoa and Hanavave, sit at the mouths of their streams, joined by a single winding road over the mountains.
The island has no airstrip and is reached by sea, and you can see that isolation on the map. Roads are few and short, most of the coastline is cliff, and the interior is contour upon contour of forested slope. The Bay of Virgins at Hanavave is framed by tall basalt pillars. It is one of the most photographed anchorages in the South Pacific.
Fatu Hiva is also known through Thor Heyerdahl, who lived here in the late 1930s and later wrote a book named after the island. Local craftspeople still make tapa cloth from bark. A Fatu Hiva map poster keeps the island's crowded relief and thin lines of settlement in a simple black-and-white composition, which suits a place this remote.

The larger of the two villages lies in a broad valley on the southwest side. Its few streets follow the stream down to a stony bay facing the open ocean.
A single track links Omoa and Hanavave. It climbs over the central ridges in a long series of bends and is the only road line crossing the island's interior.

Koteā ko Fatu Hiva
For people who have sailed the Marquesas or read Heyerdahl, this outline carries a sense of distance that few maps do. The steep relief and two small settlements make a quiet, graphic print that holds its own on a wall without needing colour.
Add a title, a date or the coordinates of your anchorage, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Buy the $9 HD files in six print sizes, or order a matte printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
