Te mapa
Hizume is an area of Shiwa, a town in Iwate Prefecture on the Kitakami River plain south of Morioka. The valley here runs north to south, with the Ōu Mountains rising to the west and the Kitakami Highlands to the east, and the flat land between them is given over mostly to rice fields, small settlements and the transport lines that follow the valley.
On a map the dominant pattern is the rectangular grid of paddy fields, broken by irrigation channels and farm roads. The Tōhoku Main Line runs through the area with a station at Hizume, and houses gather along the roads close to the tracks. The Kitakami River flows nearby, a broad curving line through the farmland.
Farming defines the area, and the seasons change the colours of the valley dramatically, though a map sees only its enduring structure. A Hizume map poster renders that structure with restraint: rail, river and field boundaries drawn in fine lines, a rural Japanese landscape reduced to its essential order and set within its frame of mountains.
Rectangular rice fields cover the valley floor in a regular pattern, their boundaries forming a fine mesh that surrounds the settlement on all sides.
The Tōhoku Main Line follows the valley north toward Morioka, and the settlement at Hizume clusters close to its station along the line.
Iwate's great river flows south through the plain nearby, a wide curving channel that contrasts with the straight lines of fields and tracks.
