Te mapa
Hualin is a town in Gansu, in the hilly country of the upper Wei River basin in north-west China. This is part of the Loess Plateau, where thick deposits of wind-blown soil have been cut by streams into steep ridges and gullies. On a map, settlements here follow the valleys, and Hualin is no exception.
The built-up area is narrow and stretched out, following the valley floor where the ground is flat enough for streets and buildings. Beyond it, the hillsides are often shaped into agricultural terraces, which appear from above as fine, curving bands along the contours. A Hualin map poster shows the contrast between the compact town and the layered slopes around it.
Roads leave the town along stream valleys and climb over saddles to the next settlement, so the network looks more like branching veins than a grid. Little about Hualin is known outside the region, and the map is best read for its terrain: the valleys, terraces and the way people have fitted a town into difficult ground.
Hualin stretches along the flat bottom of a valley, with streets squeezed between the rising slopes on either side.
The surrounding hillsides of the Loess Plateau are often cut into farming terraces, forming thin, curving lines that follow the contours.
Roads follow stream beds and ridgelines out of town, forming a branching network instead of a straight-line grid.
