Te mapa
Hưng Mỹ lies in Cà Mau, at the southern tip of Vietnam, in one of the flattest and wettest landscapes in the country. On a map, water is the dominant feature: straight man-made canals cross the land in long lines, while older natural creeks wind between them, and houses line the banks of both.
The settlement grows along these waterways rather than in a compact centre, so its shape is linear and branching. Roads often run beside the canals, and bridges mark the places where routes cross the water. Between the channels lie ponds and fields, many used for aquaculture, which appear as a patchwork of rectangular basins.
Much of the local economy in this part of Cà Mau is connected to shrimp farming and agriculture adapted to the delta's mix of fresh and brackish water. A Hưng Mỹ map poster captures a place where every line on the map is as likely to be a waterway as a street.
Long, man-made canals cross the landscape in straight lines, forming a large-scale grid that organises settlement and transport across the flat delta land.
Natural creeks meander between the canals, adding soft curves to the map and showing the older, pre-canal pattern of water through the region.
Rectangular ponds and farming basins fill the spaces between waterways, creating a dense patchwork of shapes that gives the map its distinctive delta texture.
