Huolu lies in the southeastern part of the Chongqing municipality. This is a region of high ridges, deep river valleys and limestone uplands, far from the dense towers of the central city. Towns here grow where the land allows. On a map that means narrow built-up strips along valley floors, with roads that follow the contours instead of cutting across them.
