Te mapa
Hwadae lies in North Hamgyong province on the northeastern coast of North Korea, facing the East Sea. It is the administrative centre of a largely rural county, and on a map the town appears small and regular, a few straight streets organised around its core, with farmland and villages spreading along the valleys that run inland from the shore.
The terrain rises quickly away from the coast into the mountains of the Hamgyong region, so roads and settlements favour the flatter strips near the sea and along rivers. This gives the map a strongly directional look: the coastline on one side, ridges on the other, and a narrow band of human activity running in between.
Publicly available information about the county is limited, and the map is correspondingly spare, showing main roads, the coastline and the outline of the town rather than a dense street network. A Hwadae map poster is therefore closer to a coastal study than a city portrait, a restrained composition of shoreline, valleys and a single small grid.
The coast runs along one side of the sheet, a long uneven edge that gives the composition its main line and a wide area of calm, open water.
Routes follow the river valleys inland, threading between ridges and linking the town with the smaller villages of the county.
The centre is laid out in a small, orderly pattern, a clear focal point set against the largely rural surroundings.

Koteā ko Hwadae
Hwadae may matter to people with family history in North Hamgyong, to students of the region, or to anyone drawn to remote coastlines. As a print it works as a quiet, abstract piece in which the sea does much of the work.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates in your own wording. Choose from five styles, with Blueprint and Noir suiting the coastal outline particularly well. The HD download costs $9 and includes six print sizes.
