Te mapa
Illapel is the capital of Choapa Province in Chile's Coquimbo Region, set inland in a narrow valley cut by the Illapel River. From above, the town is a tight rectangle of blocks along the valley floor. Irrigated fields line the river, and bare slopes rise steeply on either side. That contrast between the green valley and the dry hills sets the shape of the whole town.
The street plan follows the Spanish colonial pattern of a regular grid around a central plaza. The blocks run parallel to the river and stop where the ground starts to climb. Roads leave the town along the valley in both directions, following the only flat ground available. On paper, the hills show as empty space that frames the dense core of streets.
The region is seismically active, and Illapel gave its name to the magnitude 8.3 earthquake that struck central Chile in September 2015. An Illapel map poster shows a valley town at its most basic: a river, a grid, the roads that link it to the rest of the country, and the empty hills around it.
The Illapel River runs through a narrow valley, and the town packs itself onto the flat land beside it. The result is a long, clear outline with the hills pressing in from both sides.
Straight blocks laid out around a central plaza give the centre an orderly, geometric look. The lines stay regular until the slopes cut them short.
The dry slopes around the town carry few streets, so on the poster they read as open ground. That emptiness makes the built-up valley stand out sharply.

Koteā ko Illapel
People who grew up in Illapel, or have family in the Choapa valley, often want a picture of the place that is quiet and exact. A black-and-white plan does that without any postcard sentiment. The river and the grid are enough to recognise home.
You can change the title and subtitle to a family name, a year or a short dedication, and edit the coordinates line too. There are five styles to choose from: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Each one gives the valley's narrow shape a different mood.
