Independence is a city in Kenton County, northern Kentucky, part of the metropolitan area around Cincinnati. It shares the role of county seat with Covington, which is unusual in Kentucky. Over recent decades it has grown from a small crossroads community into a sizable suburban city.
The map shows that growth clearly. A few older roads converge near the historic centre. Around them, subdivision streets spread out in the looping, cul-de-sac patterns typical of American suburbs from the late twentieth century onward. The land is hilly, and many streets curve to follow the terrain. Wooded creek valleys cut between neighbourhoods.
