Te mapa
Irimbiliyam, in Malappuram district, has no dense core. Like much of central Kerala, it is a continuous spread of houses, lanes and gardens where village and town merge. From above, narrow roads wind between homesteads, follow low ridges and skirt the flatter ground used for paddy. The pattern looks organic and branching, very different from a planned grid.
The landscape is typical of the Malabar interior. Coconut and areca palms surround most houses, the land rises and falls in gentle laterite hills, and streams and irrigation channels run through the low ground. Everyday life follows the main roads, where shops, schools and places of worship tend to gather, while the smaller lanes lead into the quieter residential areas.
An Irimbiliyam map poster shows this settlement pattern clearly. Main roads carry the heavier lines, while many fine lanes branch off them and fill the space in between. The result is an intricate web of streets, a record of a part of Kerala that is best understood as a network instead of a single town centre.
Small roads split and rejoin between homesteads, forming a dense, tree-like network that shows clearly how Kerala's dispersed settlements are organised.
Flatter areas used for rice and cultivation appear as quieter open spaces between road lines, marking where the land drops away from the surrounding rises.
A few stronger roads link Irimbiliyam to neighbouring towns in Malappuram district, and most everyday activity collects along them.
