Ishinari sits on the flat farmland of eastern Saga Prefecture, not far from the border with Fukuoka. On a map the terrain barely shows itself. Instead the land is organised by water: drainage lines, irrigation channels and the rectangular blocks of fields they feed. Housing clusters along the roads, and it gives way to cultivated land within a few streets.
This part of Kyushu belongs to the broad plain that drains toward the Ariake Sea, and generations of farming have made it highly geometric.
