Te mapa
Ishioka lies in central Ibaraki Prefecture, between Lake Kasumigaura to the south-east and the Tsukuba mountains to the west. From above, the city has a clear centre around its station and older streets. Farmland, orchards and smaller settlements spread outward toward the lake shore and the wooded hills.
In ancient times, Ishioka was the seat of the provincial government of Hitachi, and the site of the old provincial office remains part of the town's identity. The city is also known for its large autumn festival. An Ishioka map poster shows these layers: the historic core, railway and roads, and the open landscape stretching to the lake and mountains.
The edges of the map are what give it character. The irregular shoreline of Kasumigaura's inlets lies on one side, and the rising, forested ground toward Mount Tsukuba on the other. In black and white, the poster balances these natural forms with the finer lines of streets and fields in the plain between them.

The area around the railway station and the historic streets forms the densest part of the map, the heart of the old provincial town.
Wooded ground rises to the west toward the Tsukuba range, framing the town with a dark, textured edge.
