Ít Ong is the administrative centre of Mường La district in Sơn La Province, in the mountains of northwest Vietnam. It lies in the valley of the Da River, known in English as the Black River. Steep, forested ridges dominate the landscape, with narrow corridors of water and road running between them.
The town is closely linked to the Sơn La Hydropower Plant, one of the largest in Southeast Asia, built on the Da River nearby. On the map, the dam and the reservoir behind it are the defining shapes: a broad, winding body of water filling former valleys, with the town's streets set along the slopes and the roads following the shoreline.
An Ít Ong map poster is a portrait of engineering and terrain together. There are few straight lines here. Roads bend with the contours, lanes climb toward hillside villages, and the water takes the shape of the valleys it flooded. The result is an unusually fluid map, very different from the grid of a lowland town.
The hydropower dam across the Da River draws a sharp edge between reservoir and river. It is one of the most recognisable engineering works in northwest Vietnam.
Behind the dam, the reservoir spreads through the mountain valleys in long, branching arms, giving the print its largest and most expressive shapes.
Roads follow the contours of steep slopes in tight curves and switchbacks, connecting the town centre to settlements scattered across the surrounding hills.

Koteā ko Ít Ong
Many people know Ít Ong through the dam, whether they worked on its construction, live in the communities around the reservoir or travel the mountain roads of Sơn La. The map records the valley as it is today, with water and town side by side.
