Te mapa
Itampolo is on the far south-western coast of Madagascar, in Atsimo-Andrefana region, facing the Mozambique Channel. This is one of the driest parts of the island, and the map shows it: few paved roads, a sparse web of sandy tracks, and homes loosely gathered near the shore rather than packed into dense blocks.
Inland, the land rises toward the limestone Mahafaly Plateau, which is covered in the spiny forest typical of southern Madagascar. Fishing communities along the coast have long depended on the sea. The shoreline is the strongest line on the poster, a long, gentle curve set against open water and a wide horizon.
An Itampolo map poster is an exercise in restraint: a coast, a handful of tracks and scattered buildings, with a great deal of white space around them. For anyone who has travelled this remote stretch of Madagascar, that emptiness is the point. It brings back long drives on sand and quiet evenings by the water.
The coastline forms the dominant edge of the map, a long line of sand and shallow water that gives the composition its horizon.
Instead of a dense street grid, thin tracks lead out from the settlement toward neighbouring villages, drawing a light, open network across the dry land.
Much of the frame is left almost empty, reflecting the sparse spiny bush and plateau country that stretches inland from the shore.
