Ridge and valley roads
Itanagar's streets follow the land instead of cutting across it. Roads trace valley floors and ridge crests, so the drawing is made of curves, hairpins and branching spurs.

Te mapa
Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, set in the lower foothills of the eastern Himalaya. From above, it looks nothing like a plains city. The built area follows the valleys and the spurs between them, so the roads bend with the contours. Neighbourhoods sit on ridges and the slopes below them, and dense green hillside fills the gaps between settled strips. Roads tend to lead along valleys rather than across the terrain.
The city is closely tied to Naharlagun, a few kilometres away, and the two work almost as one urban area. On a map, the main road corridor between them is the clearest line. Side streets branch off it and climb in switchbacks toward government buildings, schools and housing. Small streams cut down through the slopes. Because the terrain leaves little flat ground, the street network looks irregular, with loops and dead ends where other cities would have a grid.
The name is usually linked to Ita Fort, a medieval brick fortification whose remains still stand in the city. The name is often read as meaning fort of bricks. Near the city, Ganga Lake, also known as Gyakar Sinyi, is a forest-ringed lake that shows up as a small still shape among the hills. An Itanagar map poster brings these things together: a young capital, an old name, and roads shaped by the terrain.
Itanagar's streets follow the land instead of cutting across it. Roads trace valley floors and ridge crests, so the drawing is made of curves, hairpins and branching spurs.
The main road linking the capital with Naharlagun is the longest continuous line on the map. It ties two settlements into a single linear urban area running through the foothills.
Also called Gyakar Sinyi, this lake near the city is surrounded by forest. On the poster it is a small, quiet shape, one of the few open surfaces among the slopes.

Koteā ko Itanagar
People hang Itanagar for different reasons. Some grew up in Arunachal Pradesh, some were posted there for work or study, and some have made the long trip into the northeast. The map shows a hill capital where nearly every road follows the land, and that makes it look quite different from most city maps.
