Valley streets
Residential lanes gather on the flatter valley ground and follow its curves, so the town takes on long, winding shapes instead of a grid.

Te mapa
Iwai lies in the western part of Tokyo Metropolis, far from the dense centre, where the Kanto plain begins to rise into the hills that lead towards Okutama. It is a different side of Tokyo: smaller streets, more green and a landscape shaped by slopes as much as by roads.
From above, the settled area fits into the valley floors. Houses and lanes follow the lower ground, while wooded hills press in from the sides and hold the town to narrow, irregular shapes. An Iwai map poster shows that contrast, with a fine pattern of streets inside a much larger green frame.
Small rivers and streams run down from the hills through the area, and the roads usually follow them. Printed in black and white, the effect is closer to a drawing than a city plan, with the lines gathering where the land is flat and fading out where the forest begins.
Residential lanes gather on the flatter valley ground and follow its curves, so the town takes on long, winding shapes instead of a grid.
Wooded slopes surround the settled area on several sides. On the map they are wide empty spaces that frame the streets.
Small watercourses come down from the hills, and the main roads often run beside them, two lines that travel side by side across the sheet.

Koteā ko Iwai
Western Tokyo has its own loyal residents: people who chose hills and quiet over the city centre, and people who grew up with forest at the end of the street. This map shows that choice in simple, calm lines.
