Te mapa
Iwakura is a small city in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, lying on the flat Nobi Plain just north of Nagoya. It covers a compact area, and its map is correspondingly dense: fine residential streets, railway lines and roads packed into a small footprint. Like much of the plain, it is almost perfectly flat, so the street pattern follows old field divisions and waterways rather than slopes.
The Gojō River runs through the city and is known across the region for the cherry trees lining its banks, which draw large crowds each spring. The Meitetsu Inuyama Line crosses Iwakura, with Iwakura Station close to the centre, linking the city directly to Nagoya. Together, the river and the railway form the two main lines around which the city's streets are arranged.
An Iwakura map poster shows how much life fits into a small space: the fine, irregular mesh of lanes typical of Japanese towns, the calm curve of the river and the straight line of the railway. In black and white, the density becomes an intricate pattern, and the river reads as a quiet thread running through it.
The river winds through the city with cherry trees along both banks, a gentle curve on the map and one of the best-known spring viewing spots in Aichi.
The railway crosses Iwakura in a firm straight line, with Iwakura Station near the centre connecting the city directly to Nagoya just to the south.
Narrow, irregular lanes fill almost every part of the city, producing a finely detailed texture that rewards close viewing on larger poster sizes.
