Jalandhar lies in the Doaba region of Punjab, the fertile land between the Beas and Sutlej rivers. It is one of the oldest cities in the region, and its historic core is a dense cluster of narrow streets and bazaars. Around it, the city has grown across flat plains in all directions, broken mostly by rail lines and major roads.
The Grand Trunk Road, one of South Asia's oldest trade routes, passes through Jalandhar, and the city is also a railway junction. To the southeast, the Jalandhar Cantonment dates from the British period and is laid out on a far more regular plan of straight roads and open grounds, which contrasts clearly with the older city streets.
Jalandhar is known across India as a centre for making sports goods, from cricket bats to balls and protective gear, as well as for leather and hand tools. Among its landmarks is the Devi Talab Mandir, a temple beside a sacred tank. A Jalandhar map poster shows the busy old centre, the tidy cantonment and the roads that tie the city to the rest of Punjab.
The historic centre is a tight web of lanes and markets. It forms the densest part of the map, where individual streets merge into a rich, dark texture.
The British-era cantonment follows a regular plan of straight roads and open grounds. Its orderly layout stands in clear contrast to the organic streets of the old town.
The temple sits beside a large sacred tank. On the poster the water appears as a clean open shape within the surrounding streets, an easy landmark to find.
