Te mapa
Māler Kotla is a city on the flat plains of Punjab. Until 1948 it was the capital of a princely state ruled by a dynasty of Afghan origin. From above, its older core is a dense tangle of narrow lanes and bazaars, while the newer colonies around it follow more regular layouts. Beyond the city limits, straight farm roads and field boundaries stretch in every direction.
The town holds a special place in Sikh memory. In the early eighteenth century, the Nawab of Māler Kotla, Sher Mohammad Khan, spoke out against the execution of the young sons of Guru Gobind Singh at Sirhind, and his act of conscience is still remembered with gratitude. Māler Kotla is also the only Muslim-majority city in Punjab, and in 2021 it became the headquarters of a new district.
A Māler Kotla map poster captures a compact city that has kept its own character through centuries of change. The knot of old lanes with its palaces and mosques, the roads leading out to Sangrur and Ludhiana, and the agricultural grid all around make a composition that is dense at the heart and quietly ordered at the edges.
The historic core is a dense web of narrow lanes and bazaars, with palaces and mosques from the princely era set among the close-packed streets.
Main roads leave the city towards Ludhiana, Sangrur and other Punjab towns, cutting clean lines through the surrounding farmland on the poster.
Flat Punjab fields surround the city with a regular pattern of farm roads and boundaries, a calm frame for the intricate centre.
