Te mapa
Juruá is a municipality in the western part of Amazonas state, Brazil, named after the river it stands on. The Juruá is one of the most winding rivers in the Amazon basin. It loops back on itself again and again and leaves crescent-shaped oxbow lakes wherever a bend has been cut off. On a map, the town is a small grid of streets on the bank of this huge, restless river.
There is no road connecting the town to the rest of Brazil. Access is by river or by air, and nearly every trip starts at the water's edge. That shows clearly from above. The streets are few and short, the riverbank is the main edge of town, and everything beyond is forest and water, drawn only by the curves of channels and lakes.
A Juruá map poster is mostly about the river. The tiny street network occupies only a small part of the frame, while the meanders spread across the rest in long, looping lines. The result is one of the most graphic river landscapes you can put on a wall, and it clearly shows how the Amazon shapes human settlement.
The river curves in tight, repeated loops, among the most sinuous in the Amazon basin. On the print these bends form a flowing, almost calligraphic line across the page.
Old bends cut off from the main channel remain as crescent-shaped lakes. They scatter across the floodplain and record the path the river used to follow.
With no road connection, the town faces the river. Its short streets lead down to the bank, where boats provide the link with the rest of the region.

Koteā ko Juruá
Some people hang this map because they come from the Juruá or have worked there. Others simply want one of the most striking river shapes on Earth on their wall. In both cases, the print keeps the town small and the river large.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates. Blueprint and Noir emphasise the river's line, and Sand gives it a warmer, earthy tone. HD files cost $9 and include six sizes as PNG and PDF.
