Te mapa
Kainan lies on the coast of Wakayama Prefecture, just south of Wakayama city, facing the waters of the Kii Channel. The town sits on a thin strip of flat land between the sea and steep hills. On a map, the coastline, with its small bays, harbours and reclaimed industrial land, forms the town's western edge.
The streets are packed onto the lowland, following the shore and the railway line. Behind them, the hills rise quickly, and the roads become winding lanes. Many of the slopes around the area are planted with mandarin orange groves, which give the hills an orderly, terraced look.
Kainan is known for Kishu lacquerware, traditionally made in the Kuroe district, and for household goods made from hemp palm fibre. A Kainan map poster captures a craft town between sea and mountains, with a detailed coastline and a closely packed street plan.
The shore curves into small bays and harbours, with areas of reclaimed land, forming a detailed, irregular edge along the sea.
The historic lacquerware district has narrow streets typical of an old craft neighbourhood, in contrast to the wider roads elsewhere in town.
Steep slopes behind the town are covered with terraced orange groves and winding lanes, giving the eastern side of the map a layered texture.
