Te mapa
Sakai lies directly south of Osaka, facing Osaka Bay, with the Yamato River marking its northern edge. From above, the city is a dense, low-rise mesh of streets on largely flat ground, with industrial land and reclaimed areas along the coast and newer planned districts, including Senboku New Town, spreading over the hills in the south-east.
What makes Sakai unique on the map are its kofun, ancient burial mounds shaped like keyholes and surrounded by moats. The largest, traditionally attributed to Emperor Nintoku, is one of the largest tombs in the world by area. Together with other mounds in the region, the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.
In the medieval period Sakai was a self-governing merchant port, and it remains known for its kitchen knives and as the birthplace of the tea master Sen no Rikyū. A Sakai map poster shows the kofun as bold, perfectly geometric shapes set within the fine grain of the city, an image found nowhere else.
The great keyhole-shaped mound and its moats form an unmistakable shape in the middle of the city, clearly legible at every size of the poster.
Dozens of smaller mounds surround the largest tomb, some round, some keyhole-shaped, scattered among streets and parks like pieces of a puzzle.
The western edge of the city is formed by reclaimed land, docks and industrial plots, with long straight edges meeting the waters of the bay.
