Te mapa
Yao lies in the east of Osaka Prefecture, on the flat Kawachi plain between central Osaka and the mountains that mark the border with Nara. From above, the city is a dense mix of houses, workshops and factories, with railway lines crossing it from west to east and a small airport occupying an open rectangle in the south.
The eastern side of the city rises into the Ikoma Mountains, and here the street pattern changes completely. Roads become fewer and more winding, and forests cover the slopes. Yao is known for its manufacturing industries and for the Kawachi Ondo, a traditional style of folk song and dance associated with the surrounding region and its summer festivals.
A Yao map poster shows the contrast between the flat, crowded plain and the quiet mountains behind it. The fine texture of residential streets, the straight lines of the railways and the open space of the hills produce a map with a clear structure, capturing the character of a working city on the edge of Osaka.
To the east, wooded slopes rise sharply from the plain, and the dense streets give way to open space and winding roads, creating a strong boundary on the map.
In the south of the city, the airport forms a large, flat rectangle with a runway, one of the few big open spaces within the otherwise tightly built plain.
Several rail lines cross the city from Osaka toward Nara, drawing long straight lines through the fine grain of residential and industrial streets.

Koteā ko Yao
Yao is home to many people who commute into Osaka and to families working in its local industries. A map of the city captures the familiar streets of home alongside the mountains that frame every view to the east.
