Te mapa
Ikoma lies on the western edge of Nara Prefecture, on the slopes that lead up to Mount Ikoma, the ridge that separates Nara from Osaka. From above, the city looks like a set of residential clusters spread along valleys and hillsides, with curving streets that follow the contours rather than a grid. Rail lines thread through the valley floor, and wooded slopes fill the spaces between.
The mountain is the city's defining feature. The Ikoma Cable Line, opened in 1918, is often described as Japan's first commercial cable car, and it still carries people up to the Ikoma Sanjo amusement park, one of the oldest in the country. Partway up, the temple of Hōzan-ji clings to the rock face. Many residents commute through the ridge to work in Osaka.
An Ikoma map poster shows a city shaped by terrain: winding residential roads, tight valley corridors and large open areas where the forest takes over. In black and white, the contours give the street pattern a soft, organic movement. It is a fitting print for anyone who has lived on these slopes or taken the cable car to the top.
The eastern side of Mount Ikoma rises above the city, and the map shows streets thinning out as the forested ridge climbs toward the summit.
Hillside neighbourhoods are built along curving roads that follow the land, giving the city a looping, organic pattern unlike a flat-plain grid.
Rail lines and main roads run along the valley floors, where denser blocks gather around stations before the streets fan out onto the slopes.

Koteā ko Ikoma
Ikoma suits people who know the view from the ridge, who commuted daily through the tunnel to Osaka, or who spent childhood weekends at the amusement park. The map captures the way everyday life follows the mountain's shape.
