Te mapa
Habikino is a residential city in the southeast of Osaka Prefecture, part of the old Kawachi region. It sits on gently rising ground between the Osaka plain and the hills toward Nara, with the Ishikawa River running through its eastern part. At first the map looks like typical suburban Osaka, a dense mesh of small streets and rail lines, but it holds a remarkable surprise.
Ancient burial mounds of the Furuichi Kofun Group are scattered through the city. They were inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2019, together with the Mozu group in neighbouring Sakai. The largest here, the mound associated with Emperor Ōjin, is one of the biggest in Japan. On a map, these keyhole-shaped tombs and their moats are bold, perfectly geometric forms among ordinary houses.
A Habikino map poster puts those shapes at the centre. In black and white the kofun look almost like drawings pressed into the town, and their outlines are instantly recognisable. Around them run the Kintetsu lines, the streets of the older quarters, and the hillside slopes where grapes have long been grown for the Kawachi wine tradition.

The river runs through the eastern part of the city as a soft, winding line. It separates the dense streets from the rising ground and neighbouring towns beyond.
Kintetsu lines cross the city, and historic routes such as the Takenouchi Kaidō pass through it. They link the tombs to a much older network of travel.

Koteā ko Habikino
Few suburbs have such an extraordinary map. For residents it is a portrait of home with ancient monuments tucked between the houses. For visitors to the World Heritage sites it is a precise and unusual souvenir of the day they walked among the tombs.
