Te mapa
Kashihara sits in the southern part of the Nara Basin, the historic heart of early Japan. From above, the city is a mix of rail lines, residential neighbourhoods and rice fields. Three low, isolated hills stand out within it: Unebi, Miminashi and Kagu, known together as the Yamato Sanzan and celebrated in classical poetry.
Between these hills lies the site of Fujiwara-kyō, Japan's first capital laid out on a Chinese-style grid, which served as the seat of government at the end of the 7th century. At the foot of Mount Unebi, Kashihara Shrine is dedicated to Emperor Jimmu, the legendary first emperor of Japan.
A Kashihara-shi map poster places layers of history within an ordinary modern town. It shows the open ground of the old palace site, the forested hills and the rail junction at Yamato-Yagi, along with Imai-chō, a merchant quarter with well-preserved Edo-period townhouses.
Unebi, Miminashi and Kagu rise as separate green shapes within the city, forming a triangle around the site of the ancient capital.
The site of the late 7th-century palace remains largely open ground, a wide, quiet space surrounded by modern neighbourhoods and fields.
This historic merchant quarter keeps a compact, enclosed street pattern of narrow lanes, clearly different from the surrounding modern blocks.
