Te mapa
Kaltan lies in the south of Kemerovo Oblast, the coal-mining region of Siberia known as the Kuzbass. The town grew in the twentieth century around the Yuzhno-Kuzbasskaya power station and is still closely tied to energy and mining. On the map it looks exactly like what it is: a compact industrial town shaped by its plant, its river and its hills.
The Kondoma River curves past the town, and the houses and streets follow its valley. In the centre, Soviet-era apartment blocks stand in straight rows around courtyards, while older districts of wooden houses spread out in smaller, looser plots. Railway lines and industrial sites mark the edges, and the forested hills of the southern Kuzbass rise beyond them.
Neighbouring Osinniki lies close by, and Novokuznetsk, the largest city in the region, is a short drive away. A Kaltan map poster shows this small town at a scale where the river bend, the housing blocks and the industrial lines are all easy to read. It is a portrait of a place built for work.
The river's curve sets the town's shape. Streets line up along the valley floor, and bridges cross to the far bank.
The large site of the power station that Kaltan grew around appears as a distinct geometric zone at the edge of town.
Rows of apartment blocks stand beside smaller plots of private houses, two different street textures side by side on the poster.

Koteā ko Kaltan
Former residents of Kaltan are spread across Siberia and beyond, and many stay strongly attached to the town where their families worked. The map makes a fitting gift for a retiring miner or power plant worker, or for anyone who grew up by the Kondoma.
