Kamigyō-ku is one of the central wards of Kyoto, and on a map it shows the city's historic grid very clearly. Narrow streets run north–south and east–west in a regular pattern that goes back to the capital's original plan. The Kamo River marks the ward's eastern side, a long diagonal line against the straight streets.
The biggest shape in the ward is the Kyoto Imperial Palace and the park around it, a large rectangle of open space. To the west lies Nishijin, long known for silk weaving, where the blocks are finer and more tightly packed. Kitano Tenmangū, the shrine associated with scholarship, sits near the ward's northwestern edge.
A Kamigyō-ku map poster makes the most of this contrast between the dense grid and the empty palace grounds. It is a good choice for anyone who has studied at Doshisha, walked the palace gravel paths or stayed in one of the old wooden townhouses near the centre of Kyoto.

The western part of the ward, historically home to Kyoto's silk weavers, shown as a dense mesh of small lanes and tightly packed blocks.
The river runs along the ward's eastern boundary, one long clean line that sets off the right-angled streets beside it.

Koteā ko Kamigyō-ku
Kyoto's grid ranks among the most legible urban plans in the world, and this ward holds its oldest heart. On paper, the ordered streets and the open palace grounds look calm and architectural, the way the city feels on foot.
