Te mapa
Karuizawa sits on a plateau around a thousand metres above sea level in Nagano Prefecture, with the active volcano Mount Asama rising to the north. In 1886 the Canadian missionary Alexander Croft Shaw began spending summers here, and the town grew into one of Japan's best-known highland retreats. Cool air, larch forest and scattered villas still define it.
From above, the town looks unlike most Japanese settlements. Instead of a dense grid there are lanes that curve through woodland, private plots hidden among trees, and small ponds such as Kumoba Pond. Kyu-Karuizawa, the older resort area, gathers around a main shopping street, while the Shinkansen station area to the south is more open and more recent.
A Karuizawa map poster captures that distinctive looseness: fine lines scattered through large green spaces, with the station, the older resort street and the mountain slopes giving the composition structure. The town is also remembered as the place where the future Emperor Akihito met Michiko Shoda on a tennis court in 1957.
The original resort quarter centres on a main shopping street. Around it, narrow lanes spread into woodland lined with villas, churches and summer houses.
The Shinkansen station anchors a more open area to the south, with broad roads, a large shopping complex and landscaped grounds that read clearly on paper.
To the north the land rises towards the volcano. Roads thin out and the map opens up, suggesting the mountain that dominates every view from town.

Koteā ko Karuizawa
Karuizawa carries strong associations of summer holidays, family villas, weddings in its chapels and weekends away from Tokyo. A map of it is a way of keeping a season or a particular house on the wall long after the visit is over.
Add a family name, a wedding date or the name of a villa to the title and subtitle, and keep the coordinates as a quiet reference. Sand and Paper suit its woodland character, although Noir and the other styles work too.
