Te mapa
Katete is a district town in Zambia's Eastern Province, on the Great East Road that links Lusaka with Chipata and the border with Malawi. On a map the highway is the spine of the place. It runs as a long line through town, with local streets branching off on both sides before fading into fields and scattered homesteads.
The surrounding country is a rolling plateau used mostly for farming. Katete serves it as a local centre for markets, schools and health care. Much of the population lives in villages around the town rather than in the centre, so the map shows a modest core and a wide area of footpaths and tracks radiating outward.
A Katete map poster is an honest picture of a road town. The run of the highway, the short grid near the centre and the loose network of rural tracks make a simple, balanced composition. It looks especially good in the Paper or Sand style, where the lines sit softly on a warm background.
The main highway runs straight through the town and is the heaviest line on the map. It is the reason the settlement grew here, and it connects Katete east toward Chipata and west toward Lusaka.
Near the highway, the streets form a small, fairly regular pattern of blocks around markets and public buildings before quickly giving way to open ground.
Beyond the centre, thin paths and dirt roads spread in every direction toward the surrounding villages, forming a fine web across the plateau.

Koteā ko Katete
It is a meaningful piece for people born in Katete, for those who worked at its schools or hospital, and for anyone who passed through on the long drive east. It records a place that rarely appears in print at this scale.
