Khobar sits on the Arabian Gulf coast in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, and the map shows an orderly city. Streets run in long, even lines toward the sea, forming a grid of rectangular blocks, and the shoreline is edged by a corniche with parks and promenades. Wide highways connect Khobar with neighbouring Dhahran and Dammam, forming a single metropolitan area.
The city grew from a small fishing and pearling settlement after oil was discovered in nearby Dhahran in 1938. Today it is a commercial and residential centre for the region's oil industry. Just west of the city, the King Fahd Causeway begins its crossing to Bahrain, a series of bridges and embankments over the Gulf.
