Khōst lies in the southeast of Afghanistan, in a wide, relatively low basin close to the border with Pakistan. From above, the city appears as a cluster of streets and walled compounds spread over flat ground, with farmland and irrigation channels reaching outward until the land rises into the ranges that surround the basin on most sides.
The city is the capital of Khost Province and a long-standing market centre for the surrounding districts. Its lower elevation gives it a milder climate than much of the country, and the plain around it has been farmed for generations. Main roads leave the centre toward Gardez in the northwest and toward the border to the east and southeast.
