Kingswinford lies in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley, on the western edge of the West Midlands conurbation. From above, the town is mostly a large spread of twentieth-century housing estates, each with its own pattern of cul-de-sacs, crescents and curving roads. Older main roads run through them, with a village centre around the historic core.
To the west the map opens out into green belt and farmland, marking the boundary between the Black Country and the Staffordshire countryside. Kingswinford is part of the area around Stourbridge long associated with glassmaking, and the industry's heritage remains an important part of local identity, though most of the old works have gone.
