Te mapa
Kirkwood, in St. Louis County, Missouri, was laid out in the early 1850s along the new Pacific Railroad. It is often described as one of the first planned suburbs west of the Mississippi. The founders chose higher, healthier ground away from the crowded city. The original plan survives on the map as a regular grid of streets centred on the railway.
The Kirkwood station, a stone depot from the 1890s, still serves Amtrak trains. The downtown blocks around it hold shops, restaurants and the long-running farmers' market. Beyond the centre, residential streets continue the grid with notable consistency. Parks, schools and the slightly curving roads of later neighbourhoods interrupt it only occasionally.
Further south, the land drops toward the valley of the Meramec River, and major highways mark the edges of the city. A Kirkwood map poster shows a suburb whose plan has remained remarkably legible for more than 150 years. The station sits at the centre, with streets arranged around it much as they were first drawn.
The tracks cut diagonally across the grid and give the map its oldest and most important line. The town was founded because of the railway.
The regular blocks of the 1850s plan cover much of the city. They form an even pattern of residential streets on the poster.
The commercial centre gathers around the station and the market. There the blocks are slightly denser, making a clear focal point near the middle of the map.
