Te mapa
Kishaba lies in the central part of Okinawa Island, in Kitanakagusuku, on the ridge that runs between the island's two coasts. Its streets do not follow a grid. They bend with the contours, climbing and dropping around slopes and small valleys, so on the map the district appears as a web of curving lanes broken by patches of green.
This ridge has long been important ground. A short distance to the south stand the ruins of Nakagusuku Castle, one of the gusuku sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Ryukyu Kingdom. From the high ground the land falls away toward Nakagusuku Bay on the east, and the dense urban spread of central Okinawa fills the lowlands to the west.
A Kishaba map poster captures an area shaped by terrain rather than planning. In black and white the winding streets form an almost organic pattern, and they stand out clearly against the straighter roads of the lowland towns below. It makes a fitting print for someone who has lived in central Okinawa, or for a family with roots on the island.
Roads in Kishaba curve with the slope of the ridge. The resulting loops, switchbacks and dead ends give the map a hand-drawn, irregular texture unlike a planned grid.
The district sits on the high spine of central Okinawa. The land drops toward the coast on the east side and toward the built-up plain on the west.
The ruins of Nakagusuku Castle, a World Heritage gusuku with curving stone walls, lie a short way south along the same ridge and anchor the area's history.

Koteā ko Kishaba
Many people spend a few years in central Okinawa and carry the place with them long after they leave. A map of Kishaba is a quiet reminder of the streets they walked. You can add your own title, a subtitle with the years you lived there, or the exact coordinates of a home.
Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Printed posters on matte paper ship from partners in more than 30 countries, with an optional wooden frame. The $9 HD download includes 300 DPI PNG and PDF files for six sizes.
