Ridge-top roads
The main roads follow the tops of the ridges and the contours of the hills. The result is a network of long, winding lines that look more like a river system than a grid.

Te mapa
Kohima is the capital of Nagaland in northeast India. It is built along ridges and slopes in the Naga Hills, at an elevation well above the plains. Because the terrain is so steep, there is no grid here. Roads follow the contours, switching back and forth down the hillsides, while houses and neighbourhoods sit in terraces wherever the slope allows.
The town is best known for the Battle of Kohima in 1944, one of the key battles of the Second World War in Asia. The Kohima War Cemetery on Garrison Hill, which includes the site of the famous tennis court, preserves that history. Every December, the nearby Kisama heritage village hosts the Hornbill Festival, which brings together Naga tribes.
A Kohima map poster turns this uneven terrain into a pattern of curves. The roads twist and branch, the neighbourhoods follow the ridgelines, and the empty spaces between them show where the land is too steep for building. It is a very different kind of city map, shaped by the hills rather than by planning.
The main roads follow the tops of the ridges and the contours of the hills. The result is a network of long, winding lines that look more like a river system than a grid.
The war cemetery on Garrison Hill marks where the 1944 fighting was most intense. On the map, it is a small, carefully laid-out space in the middle of the ridge-top town.
Housing clusters on the slopes wherever the ground allows, leaving gaps where it is too steep. The uneven density gives the map a natural, irregular texture.

Koteā ko Kohima
Kohima means a lot to Naga families, to people who have visited the Hornbill Festival and to people whose relatives fought here in 1944. A map that shows the winding hill roads can mark any of these connections without explanation.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be edited, so the poster can hold a name, a date or a few words in a local language. It comes in five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
