Te mapa
Kombai lies in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, in the Cumbum valley, a long green basin enclosed by ranges of the Western Ghats. The town sits on the flat valley floor close to the foot of the hills, and its map shows a compact core of streets surrounded by a fine pattern of cultivated fields and farm tracks.
The name is known well beyond the region because of the Kombai, a native South Indian dog breed traditionally associated with this area and valued for its loyalty and guarding instinct. The valley itself is known for vineyards, coconut groves and other crops, watered by streams descending from the Ghats, while the hills to the west rise steeply toward the Kerala border.
A Kombai map poster sets the town against a strong backdrop: dense lanes in the centre, then a spread of farmland, then the sudden rise of the mountains. The contrast between flat valley and steep slope gives the design unusual depth for a small town, and it holds particular meaning for families rooted in the area.
The ranges rise to the west of town, where roads give way to steep, largely empty slopes, forming a dramatic open edge on one side of the poster.
Fields, groves and vineyards surround the town on the valley floor, their boundaries creating a fine texture across the lower part of the map.
The centre of Kombai is a tight network of streets and lanes, the densest part of the design and the heart of the town's daily life.
