Königssee Map Poster & Print
Königssee lies in Berchtesgaden National Park in the far southeast of Bavaria, close to the Austrian border. It is long and very narrow, running roughly north to south between steep mountain walls, which gives it the feel of a fjord. The village of Schönau am Königssee sits at its northern end, where the boats depart.
Passenger boats on the lake are electric, and on the crossing the boatman traditionally plays a trumpet to demonstrate the echo off the rock walls. Halfway down the western shore, on a small peninsula, stands the pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä with its red onion domes. Beyond the southern end lies the smaller Obersee.
