Kottangara lies in Kollam district, in southern Kerala, a short distance inland from the city of Kollam. Like much of coastal Kerala, it does not have a sharp line between town and country. Kollam district is known for its backwaters, its long coastline and its history as a trading port. Settlements like Kottangara belong to the dense, semi-rural pattern typical of the region, where homes, small shops, places of worship and gardens are mixed closely together along a network of roads.
