Te mapa
Kuji lies on the Pacific coast in the north of Iwate Prefecture, at the mouth of the Kuji River. The city centre occupies the flat ground of the river valley just inland from the port, while hills rise steeply behind it, so the map shows a compact urban area pressed between water and forested slopes.
Along the coast the shoreline turns into the rugged edge typical of Sanriku, with headlands, small coves and fishing harbours. The Kosode area on this coast is known for its women free divers, the ama, and became widely known across Japan as a setting for the 2013 NHK drama Amachan.
Kuji is also a major source of amber in Japan, found in the surrounding hills and displayed at a dedicated museum. A Kuji map poster traces the river winding out of the mountains, the harbour breakwaters and the narrow coastal roads that link fishing communities along the shore.
The river widens as it reaches the sea, its broad lower course dividing the city and ending in a clean meeting with the Pacific coastline.
Long straight breakwaters and quays extend into the sea, precise geometric lines that contrast with the natural curves of the shore.
Headlands and small coves break up the coast, creating an intricate edge where cliffs, beaches and fishing harbours alternate along the frame.

Koteā ko Kuji
Kuji means something to fans of Amachan, to those who have dived or fished along this coast, and to families who rebuilt here after the 2011 tsunami. A map captures the city's close relationship with the sea.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a date or a family name, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Six print sizes come as 300 DPI PNG and print-ready PDF files for $9.
