Te mapa
Kuroiso is a town in Tochigi Prefecture, now part of the city of Nasushiobara after a merger in 2005. It grew around Kuroiso Station on the Tōhoku Main Line, and on a map the railway and the station area still anchor the street pattern, with a compact grid of shopping streets and residential blocks spreading out on either side of the tracks.
The town lies on the Nasuno-ga-hara, a broad alluvial fan that was long too dry for farming. In the 1880s the Nasu Canal was built to bring water across it, and it is remembered as one of the three great canals of Japan. To the north rise the Nasu Mountains, a volcanic range with hot springs and highland resorts.
A Kuroiso map poster shows a railway town set within a carefully engineered landscape. The straight lines of the railway and the grid, the canal and irrigation channels across the plain and the fields reaching toward the mountains make a calm, structured composition, a clear picture of how land and transport shaped this corner of northern Kantō.
The station on the Tōhoku Main Line sits at the heart of the town, its tracks forming a strong straight line through the street grid.
Built in the 1880s to irrigate the dry Nasu plain, the canal and its branches trace long lines across the farmland around the town.
The volcanic range rises to the north, and on a larger frame the plain can be seen tilting gently upward toward the highlands.
